In a near-future America crushed by economic collapse, the government targets benefit recipients and homeless under the guise of economic recovery. Maya Morales, a sharp, fiercely observant young woman, is forced into the New Thought Center, an institution designed to transform citizens into compliant, “productive” members of society. Their methods are brutal: deprivation, punishment, and relentless pressure to conform.
Told through Maya’s ironic, perceptive first-person lens, Shattered But Not Silenced is a story of defiance and survival. She documents the Center’s abuses through her sketches, turning her art into both witness and weapon. Her resistance spreads underground, challenging the authoritarian regime that sought to reprogram her.
Whether it’s the rigid schedules of schools, the unbending rules of workplaces, or the standardized procedures of government and rehabilitation programs, institutions are built for compliance, not individuality. The novel grew out of questions about what happens when systems prioritize productivity over humanity. The author drew from her experience in business, education, and advocacy to shape Maya’s inner voice and perspective.
ARC Reader Review: I liked Maya and her ironic inner voice. The writing is amazing! So many well-crafted sentences and paragraphs. The language used to describe the settings and in dialogue flows. Now that I finished reading, I’ll miss Maya. Great job tying up loose ends. Well done!
ARC Reader Review: Great writing… You had me at the first page wanting more. Four chapters in and I can’t wait to read the next one! Honestly!!! I can’t put this book down. Maya got arrested! Wow! Didn’t expect that!
Quote Highlights:
“My art was my voice. Maybe one day, someone would listen.”
This simple and heartbreaking line captures the emotional heart of the novel. It reveals why Maya sketches: art is her form of resistance and survival, and her voice resonates throughout the story.
“Expect high winds and rain. Possible flooding. Maybe survival is about adapting to the storm.” Love this line because Maya turns her sketch into a philosophy. It captures Maya’s inner voice and the novel’s survival theme in one breath.
“Who decides what makes a life valuable, and what happens to those who do not fit that definition?” It’s a quiet, devastating question that the whole book encapsulates, and it’s what made the ending land.
