In a near-future America crushed by economic collapse, the government targets benefit recipients and homeless under the guise of economic recovery. Maya Morales, a sharp, fiercely observant young woman, is forced into the New Thought Center, an institution designed to transform citizens into compliant, “productive” members of society. Their methods are brutal: deprivation, punishment, and relentless pressure to conform.
Told through Maya’s ironic, perceptive first-person lens, Shattered But Not Silenced is a story of defiance and survival. She documents the Center’s abuses through her sketches, turning her art into both witness and weapon. Her resistance spreads underground, challenging the authoritarian regime that sought to reprogram her.
Whether it’s the rigid schedules of schools, the unbending rules of workplaces, or the standardized procedures of government and rehabilitation programs, institutions are built for compliance, not individuality. The novel grew out of questions about what happens when systems prioritize productivity over humanity. The author drew from her experience in business, education, and advocacy to shape Maya’s inner voice and perspective.
