Sensitivity Review

Leslie Sullivan, Sensitivity Reviewer

1. Is the character a well-rounded person or do they appear to be simply a collection of autistic stereotypes?

Maya is an incredibly complex person who evolves continuously throughout the story. There is nothing at all stereotypical about her. Very well-crafted character.

2. Are the character's autistic traits portrayed in a realistic way?

Yes. From stimming to sensory overload, even to her ability to cope under pressure while melting down in circumstances others might consider mundane, Maya’s autism is portrayed in a relatable and realistic way.

Additionally, the story begins in her teen years, and she acts like a teenager; then, as she grows into adulthood, she grows into her autistic traits as well. All too often, I see autistic adults portrayed as children. Her growing pains and her transition to adulthood is portrayed perfectly, even under circumstances most of us have not seen (and hopefully will not).

3. Does the character interact with neurotypical characters in a realistic way and vice versa?

Yes. Every interaction she has feels authentic and realistic. I often see authors portraying neurotypical people reacting way too strongly to autistic traits, but here I see a mix of reactions, just like in real life.

Additionally, her parents’ treatment of her, from her mother’s helicopter parenting to her father’s insistence that she be given some independence all seems well in bounds of realism.

Conclusion:

This was a phenomenal manuscript with a likeable, relatable and well-crafted main character who happens to be autistic. This is representation at its finest.
